Sony Q1 Earnings Released
Net profit fell 47 percent against the same period last year to ¥35 billion (US$326 million) while sales （from: http://www.china-computer-accessories.com） were virtually unchanged at ¥2 trillion.
The effects of tough price competition in the electronics and cell phone businesses hit Sony's profits during the April to June quarter, it said Tuesday.
But the unchanged sales figure hides a good deal of movement within several of Sony's key business areas during the quarter. Sales and profitability of its Bravia LCD TVs (liquid crystal display) increased and the game business is finally back in the black after the launch of the PlayStation 3 console, however the Cybershot and Handycam digital camera and Vaio PC (http://www.china-computer-accessories.com/buy-pc/ )businesses, which have been doing well for Sony recently, hit hurdles in the form of increased competition.
Overall electronics sales rose 0.7 percent to ¥1.4 trillion while operating profits slid 57 percent to ¥44 billion. Regional sales fell in Japan and advanced in the U.S. and Europe but this was negated by the strong yen, which meant Sony recorded a drop in U.S. sales and unchanged European sales when calculated in the Japanese currency.
The electronics business was also hit by a collapse in income from affiliated cell-phone maker Sony Ericsson. The company contributed 97 percent less profits to Sony during the current quarter than it did last year.
On the positive side, an increase in sales of Bravia TVs(from:http://www.china-computer-accessories.com/buy-TV/) led Sony's regional electronics sales growth worldwide except Japan, where the popularity of Blu-ray Disc recorders was notable. Sony hopes to ship 600,000 Blu-ray Disc recorders and 2.5 million Blu-ray Disc players worldwide this year, it said.
Sony's games sector saw 17 percent higher sales and an operating profit of ¥5 billion on the back of strong PlayStation 3 shipments. During the quarter Sony shipped 1.6 million of the consoles, which is more than double that of the same quarter last year. Additionally PlayStation Portable shipments jumped 75 percent to 3.7 million.
Sony's operating profit in the first quarter was ¥121 billion.
Looking ahead to the full financial year, Sony raised its sales estimate by 2 percent to ¥9.2 trillion. At the time of its last forecast it expected the value of the yen to stick around ¥100 to the U.S. dollar during the current year but it now expects this to be around ¥105. The currency figure won't, however, lead to increased sales due to a more cautious outlook on electronics.

The Inkjets expected to weigh on earnings

Lexmark(from:http://www.office-products-suppliers.com/d-p12185359-Lexmark_Cartridge/)International will release its second-quarter earnings on Tuesday, and analysts expect the Lexington-based printer maker to continue its well-publicized struggles stemming from its inkjet printer division.

Since late 2005, that division has struggled as consumers bought printers, which often are sold at a loss, but failed to purchase enough ink cartridges over time to meet Lexmark's profit expectations. The company withdrew from 20 percent of its inkjet sales in 2006 and then announced last October that it would drop another 30 percent of sales in hopes of finding the most profitable customers.

Along with those announcements were restructurings that closed plant(from: http://www.office-products-suppliers.com/buy-plant/)s, eliminated employees and transferred thousands of jobs to lower-wage countries.

”It's even money if they'll announce another restructuring next year,“ said Tom Carpenter, vice president and senior equity analyst at Hilliard Lyons in Louisville.

”At this point, it's tough to see inkjet surviving,“ he said, pointing to Lexmark's decision to walk away from such a high percentage of its business.

”Can inkjet survive when you're walking away from 30 to 40 percent of your business?“ Carpenter said. ”After a while, that's going to catch up to you.“

The segment saw its revenue increase 3 percent year-over-year in 2006, and 5 percent year-over-year in 2007. But when excluding certain restructuring charges, the division's operating income – its profit – fell 5 percent and 2 percent, respectively, in those years. Executives have said the division's expenses have increased because of a strong investment in research and development, as well as spending for a larger sales force.

”Given the overall economy, laser growth is likely to be tepid“ in the second quarter, Carpenter said last week.

Mainframe Sales, Strong Overseas Market Buoy IBM Earnings

IBM (from:http://www.china-computer-accessories.com/buy-IBM/)reported strong second-quarter earnings Thursday, beating analyst expectations and buoyed in part by sales of its new high-end mainframe computer and continued strong performance overseas.

Diluted earnings per share for the quarter were $1.98 on revenue of $26.8 billion, a 13 percent revenue increase over last year, or 6 percent when adjusted for currency valuations.

Analysts polled by Thomson Financial had on average predicted $1.82 per share and $25.9 billion in revenue.

Mark （from：http://www.china-computer-accessories.com/buy-Mark/） Loughridge, IBM's chief financial officer, crowed over the results during a conference call Thursday. "This is one of the best quarters I've ever seen. ... These are truly powerful results," he said.

Like that of its rivals Oracle and SAP, IBM's financial results are increasingly seen as a bellwether for the economy as the world goes through an economic slowdown.

Sales in the Americas region stood at $10.9 billion, an increase of 6 percent when adjusted for currency effects. Revenue from the Europe, Middle East and Africa region was $9.8 billion, up 7 percent, and Asia Pacific revenue was $5.3 billion, a 6 percent jump, both on a currency-adjusted basis.

IBM's System z mainframe sales grew by 32 percent over the previous year. System z "has been extremely well-received in the marketplace," Loughridge said. "We entered the quarter with a strong deal pipeline, and this quarter, frankly, we were sold out."

System p sales also grew, by 29 percent over last year.

It was a different story for IBM's other hardware lines, however: System x sales fell by 5 percent, and System i by 47 percent. Loughridge associated that decline with IBM's ongoing efforts to move its legacy System i customer base to the newer Power platform.

Another weak spot was the Systems and Technology segment, which fell 3 percent when adjusted for currency, on $5.2 billion in revenue.

Meanwhile, Global Technology Services revenue rose 8 percent on an adjusted basis to $10.1 billion; and Global Business （from：http://www.china-computer-accessories.com） Services sales were up 9 percent to $5.1 billion.

IBM raised its profit forecast for all of 2008 to at least $8.75 per share, up from $8.50. The company has a 2010 target of $10 to $11 per share.

Without naming any potential target areas, Loughridge suggested IBM is looking to make further acquisitions even as it comes off large deals, such as its purchase of BI (business intelligence) vendor Cognos. "At today's prices there are some very attractive candidates out there," he said.
