Blackpool gets £11m boost for seafront dance space

Blackpool council's £11m plan for a new outdoor performance and events space on the seafront aimed to help the town become the UK capital of dance has received a big funding boost from the government.

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has provided £4m towards the Tower Festival Headland scheme, part of the three-year Sea Change programme to invest £45m in UK seaside resorts.

(from: http://www.building-materials-china.com/buy-Tower_/)Festival Headland, which will be sited in front of Blackpool Tower, is intended to support the town's regeneration efforts, raising visitor numbers by giving the seafront a more contemporary feel.

Sir Howard Bernstein, chairman of ReBlackpool, said: “The Tower Festival Headland will embrace the town's heartland and raison d'etre, creating a festival and events zone that aims to generate excitement for both residents and visitors.

“An essential part of the town's regeneration masterplan, the investment will not only provide a new entertainment zone, it will provide new commercial and employment opportunities for businesses and residents of the town.”

The project(from: http://www.building-materials-china.com) is being undertaken through a partnership between Blackpool council, ReBlackpool, Defra and the Northwest Regional Development Agency (NRDA).

Blackpool councillor Maxine Callow said: “The Tower Headland will provide something we have never had in Blackpool before. We are currently in position that we cannot hold some major events and performances as we don't have appropriate outdoor space available.

Steven Broomhead, chief executive of the NRDA, said: “The new performance space and improved streetscape(from: http://www.building-materials-china.com/d-p6889889-streetscape/) will complement work already being undertaken on Blackpool's promenade and will create a vibrant public realm that will benefit residents and visitors.”

Microsoft still no plans to make Windows for customer

Microsoft’s marketing and communications wonk James Utzschneider offered some detail about its forthcoming release in a blog post late last week.
Microsoft has quietly released to manufacturing a tweaked version of Windows XP to run on the One Laptop Per Child XO computer.
“Microsoft internally ‘RTM'ed’ the Windows XP version we are building for the OLPC XO computer.( from:http://www.china-computer-accessories.com) Windows on the XO looks like it is on track for availability in these types of national educational PC deals in September,” he said.
“We still have no plans to make Windows available for individuals who bought an XO in the Give 1 Get 1 program though.”
In May Redmond and the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) foundation confirmed the XO laptop would be made available as Windows-loaded machines. That was Microsoft’s(from: http://www.china-computer-accessories.com/buy-Microsoft/) first public acknowledgement that the firm was working on a port of XP for the distinctive white and green machine.
That followed OLPC project founder Nicholas Negroponte revealing in April that the group had reached a Windows-only agreement with the software giant, much to the chagrin of Linux fanciers.

IT staff jobs are at increasing risk -- both for contractors and in-house workers -- according to a survey of top CIOs by Goldman, Sachs & Co released last week. Global services companies will also feel the pinch because of the slowing economy.

A second survey showed that basic PC and network hardware(from: http://www.office-products-suppliers.com/buy-hardware/), as well as professional services providers, would bear the largest proportion of spending cuts. It also showed that CIOs planned to emphasize economizing measures over investments new technologies, with cloud computing emerging as the last item on their priority lists, despite the hype around it.

IT contractors to bear the brunt of cuts

"Demand for discretionary IT projects dropped to its lowest point" in the 41-study history of the Goldman Sachs staffing survey, which asked 100 managers with strategic-decision-making authority (mainly CIOs at multinational Fortune 1000 companies) about their about IT staffing plans for 2009.

The Sachs report states that "in a cost-constrained IT(from: http://www.office-products-suppliers.com/buy-IT/) budget scenario, CIOs will most likely look to cut their resources first from lower-value augmented [contract] IT staff." The company also describes its survey as "an early warning flag" for service providers' 2009 bookings of new projects.

These intended cutbacks are a change from last fall. When the managers were asked in October which area of IT service delivery resources they would cut for application-related development or maintenance work, the answer was 0 percent for in-house staff. However, with a declining economy, a February survey's results saw 8 percent of respondents saying in-house IT programming staff would be cut. In April, 15 percent of respondents said in-house staff would be cut. That dropped to 11 percent in the June survey (the most recent), which was released last week.

But contract staff fare much worse, with 48 percent of the respondents saying that such staff would be cut. And 30 percent of the responders said on-site third-party service provider staff would also be cut for application-related development or maintenance work. Twelve percent of the managers said they would cut staff from offshore third-party service providers.

Eric Jackson, manager of hedge fund Ironfire Capital and leader of shareholder group Yahoo Plan B, said Sunday he would encourage his shareholder group Yahoo Plan B (http://www.china-computer-accessories.com/Buying_Leads/ ) to elect five Yahoo directors and four Icahn nominees, Reuters reported. His group is made up of 150 Yahoo stockholders representing 3.2 million Yahoo shares. "It's become clear over the last two weeks that many shareholders are reluctant to support the entire list of Icahn nominees (http://www.china-computer-accessories.com/News/ )," Reuters reported Jackson planned to say in a statement Monday. However, Reuters reported that a source familiar with the board's thinking said it would see no need to compromise with Icahn. Icahn has proposed an alternative slate of board members, as part of a bid to get Yahoo to agree to some sort of takeover or deal with Microsoft. Icahn is backing a change of management in part because he does not think Microsoft can negotiate with the current board. The move comes as both sides prepare for the August 1 proxy showdown over control of Yahoo's board. Icahn's challenge took a hit Friday when Legg Mason Capital Management said it would back Yahoo's existing management at the company's shareholder's meeting next month. The investment firm controls about 60.7 million shares of Yahoo, which represents about 4.4 percent of outstanding Yahoo stock.
