China Telecom to invest $29.41 to build Wi-Fi

People can use laptops or handsets, such as iPhones, from: http://www.china-computer-accessories.com/d-p14741553-Apple_iphones_16gb/ to access the Internet around Wi-Fi hot spots.

China Telecom plans to invest 200 million yuan (US$29.41 million) to build or upgrade Wi-Fi networks in 30 cities nationwide, mainly in the Yangtze River Delta, industry sources said yesterday.

China plans to establish a "wireless city" in 10 cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Hangzhou, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. The hot spots are normally established at airports, hotels, commercial buildings and shopping malls.

Shanghai Telecom, which started Wi-Fi services in the railway stations early this month, will build 3,000 Wi-Fi spots citywide by the end of this year, triple the amount from a year ago.

"We don't doubt China Telecom's decision and capital reserve for Wi-Fi," said Alvin Mu, analyst of In-Stat, a US-based research firm. "China Telecom's next step is to develop Wi-Fi handheld devices."

China Telecom announced on Monday it would spend 110 billion yuan to purchase China Unicom's CDMA network and business.

The transition is expected to happen on March 31.

China Telecom will probably launch the phones which support both CDMA and Wi-Fi, Mu said.

Last year, China's WLAN (wireless local area network) equipment market revenue was US$142 million, up 56.7 percent year on year, ranking No.1 in the Asia Pacific region excluding Japan.

Market revenue is expected to reach US$197 million this year and US$498 million in 2010, according to IDC
